With a zest for life, boundless creativity, and a keen eye for style, Jonathan has become a household name for design enthusiasts. In our interview, he shares the ins and outs of his life, his stunning homes, and his unwavering passion for all things glamorous.

Meet Jonathan Adler

Our interview begins with a simple question: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Jonathan reveals that he’s not just a designer and potter, but a “highly-caffeinated person.” His energy is palpable, and it undoubtedly shines through in his work.

Jonathan’s professional journey is a fascinating one. While his dad was a lawyer who painted in his free time, and his mom worked at Vogue and sewed colorful curtains, Jonathan found his calling in pottery, despite an early naysayer who advised him to become a lawyer. He didn’t follow that advice and embarked on a creative odyssey that has become a shining example of pursuing one’s passion.

Homes That Define Elegance

Jonathan splits his time between two exquisite locations: Shelter Island in the Hamptons and Palm Beach. While it may sound fancy, he ensures that these homes are not just a reflection of luxury but also an embodiment of personality and style.

In Shelter Island, the home exudes warmth, rustic charm, and modern aesthetics, combining elements of California, Japanese minimalism, and Swedish design. It’s a true testament to the idea that a well-designed space can make you feel at home, no matter where you are.

The room Jonathan and his husband, Simon Doonan, spend the most time in is a multifunctional area that combines the kitchen, living room, TV space, and a firepit. It’s a cozy and versatile spot that perfectly encapsulates their lifestyle.

In Palm Beach, the colorful decor takes inspiration from nature, mirroring the shades of the sky, clouds, and sun. With a real sense of place, you can’t help but know you’re in Palm Beach as soon as you step through the front door. Jonathan’s favorite spot? The backyard, which he and Simon lovingly named “Lemon Alley.” It’s a vibrant and inviting outdoor space that allows them to fully embrace the beautiful surroundings.

What Jonathan loves most about his homes is that they are “singular, chic, and make me feel more eccentric and more glamorous than I really am.” They are extensions of his creative soul and serve as a canvas for his ever-evolving vision.

Modern. American. Glamour.

When asked to describe his home decor style, Jonathan boils it down to three words: Modern. American. Glamour. It’s a style that blends the best of contemporary design with a classic American touch, all while radiating an undeniable sense of luxury.

Favorites and Splurges

Jonathan’s favorites in his home are more personal than you might expect. His husband, Simon, and their rescue dog, FoxyLady, top the list, alongside a papier-mache bust of Prince acquired at a yard sale. These choices reflect his unique tastes and the people (and pets) he holds dear.

As for splurges, Jonathan admits that their Paul Evans bed was “bone-crushingly expensive,” but the comfort and style it brings to their space make it worth every penny.

No Wishlists, Just Creations

Jonathan’s approach to design is refreshing. He doesn’t keep a wishlist; instead, he creates what he envisions and hopes that others will share his passion. It’s a testament to his creative spirit and his commitment to staying true to his artistic vision.

Adding Color and Personality

To infuse color and personality into your space, Jonathan’s advice is to start with a chic foundation and then accessorize with abandon. “My parents only taught me one thing as a child: banish the banal,” says Jonathan, “Life’s too short to look back when you’re about to snuff it and see an endless haze of beige.”

Housewarming Gift Extravaganza

When asked about his go-to housewarming gift, Jonathan’s answer is as stylish as you’d expect. He always carries a set of his own coasters and a trinket tray or two in his LL Bean tote. He’s like a “Jewish Santa,” spreading the joy of thoughtful and chic gifts.

The Heart of Homeworthy Living

Finally, Jonathan’s insight into what makes a house truly homeworthy is profoundly touching. “When it’s filled with the people you love most. The rest is just stuff.” In a world that often places great importance on material possessions, his words serve as a powerful reminder of the true essence of home.
