Quinta da Alegria offers a luxurious retreat with meticulously restored 18th-century architecture, lush gardens, a pristine pool, a chapel and guest houses.
Step into the enchanting world of Quinta da Alegria, a rural haven steeped in history and nestled in the charming Portuguese village of Sintra, a mere 20 km from the bustling heart of Lisbon. This architectural gem was constructed at the close of the 18th century and pays homage to the Pombaline style.
Sintra’s temperate climate and lush landscapes have long captivated Portugal’s nobility, inspiring the creation of palaces and refined residences surrounded by gardens of cultural and botanical significance. Quinta da Alegria graces this enchanted setting, where groves, water features, and historic monuments converge to create a truly magical atmosphere.
In 2007, Princess Elisabeth von Schmieder, a visionary with a passion for restoration, acquired Quinta da Alegria when its structures were in disrepair, and its once-splendid gardens lay neglected. Over the subsequent two years, a meticulous renovation unfolded to preserve the property’s original design — earning it the coveted certification of public interest.
The Quinta, sprawling across 1392 sqm, encompasses the Main House, a three-story marvel with an internal elevator, two guest houses, a chapel, tower, poolside support house, and caretaker residences. The four-hectare garden, a masterpiece of design with terraced levels, hosts greenhouses, a dovecote, vegetable garden, orchard, lakes, waterfalls, fountains, and reservoirs—a haven for centuries-old vegetation.
